"Ges穫ge des Ostens for two pianos and a pianist" iscomputer music created by the interaction between a pianist and acomputer. The music consists of three distinct elements; a pianist, acomputer-controlled player piano, and a singing voice played with asampler.
Two computer-controlled player pianos provide the interface betweenperformer and computer system. The pianist plays one of the playerpianos while the computer controls the other two elements. In allcases the computer responds to specific musical elements in the musicplayed by the pianist using the following methods: recording theplaying of the piano (note-sequence) and replaying it on the other(computer-controlled) piano; composing and playing independently, butin synchrony with the first piano; triggering the sound sampler toreproduce the Japanese folk song; analyzing the pitches of the songand reproducing them on the piano; and adapting the speed andloudness for both pianos.
All of these functions are realized during the actual performance. This means that the pianist's playing serves both as the mostimportant element of this music and also as a the source for a seriesof "command-cues" to the computer.Melodic elements in this piece wereproduced entirely from a simulation algorithm for Japanese folksongs, based on research by the composer Minao Shibata.
"Ges穫ge des Ostens" has four movements: "Toccata", "E/W-Converter","Haus", "Memory overflow", which are played without interruption. Thepiece was composed for pianist Aki Takahashi in 1992 and waspremiered by her that year in Kanagawa, Japan.

"My favorite few of Coltrane's" was composed in the summer of1993 for the viola da gamba player Konstanze-Marie Ahlers. The musicderives from the ongoing algorithmic transformation of a loopedmelody from a well known film score. The output of the algorithm wasthen scored for the two instruments. This compositional process wasinspired by the improvisatory technique of the great jazz saxophonistJohn Coltrane, although there is no direct connection between histechnique and the algorithms used here. This is the composer's firstJazz composition.

"Christe des Ostens for Piano, Ensemble and Computer" iscomputer music created through the interaction between ensemblemusicians and the computer. It was written for the pianist KristiBecker in 1993.
One of the major concepts of this music is the iterative recordingand the playback of the ensemble's parts. The processes of recording, playback and transformation of the various sounds produced by themusicians are all carried out by the computer. The musical contentperformed on the MIDI piano is interpreted by the computer which thenmakes decisions for realtime processing of the sound, based on thismusical data.
This composition takes as its basis the structure of the human mindas a perceiving subject. The everyday experiences of a human beingare continuously "written" into his mind in the form of new memories, recalled again and again, and combined, or "rewritten", with newexperiences.
There are two different types of sound data in the computer program -a fragment of Japanese folk music and a fragment of Gregorian chant. These fragments are played continuously but only within the computerand are not heard directly. During the performance, recordings of thelive musicians are written into the memory of the computer, mixedwith the internal folk music and chant. Playback of these sampledrecordings is triggered by specific materials in the piano part.
Many of musical excerpts (piano music by Maurice Ravel, the Japanesenational anthem, Gregorian chant) stem from the composer's personalassociations. These associations are generalized to the memory of thesounds just played, his childhood memories, or the memories of anentire people's culture in the musical realizations.
In the manner of Ravel's "Le tombeau de Couperin", Christe des Ostensis dedicated to the memory of the deceased former classmate TomokoTakahashi.
