Center for Media Culture
The Center for Media Culture (CMC) is an auxiliary research body, officially existing within the Institute. However, it actually acts as a link between the Institute and the Academy, and serves as an interface, connecting the various activities of IAMAS with the external community. One of CMC's key responsibilities is to build a network of domestic and international media-related research and education institutions. It is also the organizer of the various IAMAS events, including exhibitions that are held at the school. CMC's activities are diverse, encompassing the production of IAMAS publications such as the Graduate Exhibition Catalogue, web-site administration, PR and archiving. CMC consists of specialist lecturers, researchers, and some Institute faculty members also double as CMC members. The planning and operation of the biennial "World Forum for Media Art and Culture" is also an important responsibility of CMC. After its inception in 1995, it was held for the first 4 times as the interactive art festival "Interaction". Subsequently in 2004, it was reorganized as "Ogaki Biennale", hosting workshops, outside street exhibitions and performances in inner-city Ogaki. The Second "Ogaki Biennale" is scheduled to be held this year from October 6 to 15. Working abroad as well, in September 2004 CMC undertook a large-scale exhibition introducing IAMAS at "Ars Electronica", Europe's largest media arts festival. On a local level also, CMC holds events to introduce the students' works at the Information Studio in Softopia Japan among a number of other places.
CMC also assists with the Artist-in-Residence program that has been implemented at IAMAS since its founding. The program is one in which an internationally active artist is selected by the screening committee and resides for a six-month duration at IAMAS to work on media creations. The participant for the first term in 2006 was Slovenian artist Saso Sedlacek. CMC also distributes nutria tsushin, an email magazine introducing CMC activities as well as various people and events at IAMAS. For those interested in CMC activities, please come to the center on the first floor in the main building. From the planning and operation of the culture forum to creation assistance for the Artist in Residence program, participating in CMC activities would make for an enriching student experience at IAMAS.Activities
