Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences
(Master's course) Due to the rapid development of information technology, a new view of civilization is beginning to become a reality. This involves the re-organization of art, industry and people's lifestyles based on the concept of unifying science and art. We use the term "knowledge of creation" to refer to knowledge that is continually engaged with society through the creation of physical objects and information. "Media creation" is the activity of pursuing this knowledge through the application of computers. The school is only a graduate school (master's course) offering one course and one major, namely in Media Creations. The school aims to train advanced multimedia specialists who have a clear grasp of the act of "creating" from a broad perspective, including philosophical and conceptual dimensions, and hold a view of cultural creation within a long-term framework in order to cater for an increasingly internationalized and diversified society. The Institute consists of four Studios. Studio 1 aims to explore and analyze technically and socially the various challenges posed by interactive media, and conducts research and creative activities involving artistic and practical aspects of interactive media. Studio 2 (Time Based Media) conducts research into diverse time structures corresponding to new electronic media, and proposes new media in response to such structures. Studio 3 (Interface) is involved in activities such as research into the practical use of electronic media and the development of interfaces. Studio 4 (Media Aesthetics) examines the culture of the electronic information environment at a fundamental level. |
International Academy of Media Arts and Sciences
(Multimedia Studio Course) The International Academy of Media Arts and Sciences is a vocational college established in 1996, prior to the foundation of the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences, as part of Gifu Prefecture's strategy to promote advanced information technology through the education of specialists. The Academy is a unique, advanced-level vocational college active in specialist fields, and students learn technology and theory in a wide range of subjects necessary for today's information society, including CG, digital imaging, design, sound, networking and programming. Students are trained for work as media specialists and creators, able to use these skills and knowledge to pursue creative activities in diverse areas. Subjects are divided into 4 courses: AND Course, focusing on network design, CGI Course, dealing with computer graphics and images, DIT Course, pursuing design for the information age, and DSP Course involved in means of expression such as sound art and performance. As well as exploring their area of specialty in depth, students are also able to study beyond the bounds of their particular course and acquire a range of knowledge and skills. The curriculum is diverse and comprehensive, covering introductory "literacy" subjects, "perspective" subjects that broaden students' outlooks, and "project" subjects that allow students to build up practical experience. |
