Creativework and Motifwork 2010 class will be held on Ogaki City from 12th April.
This curriculum is fieldwork for new students.

In this time students use "sekai camera" with iPhone.
And they make new maps of Ogaki City.

Asobow!! Project
IAMAS staff and students and citizen supporter make a community Asobow!! team for thinking about Creative City Ogaki.

Asobow!! Project produced some workshop and symposium in this year.
Many citizen from Ogaki or other city join this project.

As part of the seminar in the Academy’s AND Course, the class made new proposals towards the end of last year under the theme of “Utilizing IT for Society”. These were created from the students’ perspectives and mainly targeted Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank.

For several months during the latter half of last year they surveyed the bank and societal conditions, each of the five students preparing one proposal. This year in January the students presented their proposals to several key bank directors (below the level of bank president). In response the Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank reviewed ways of dealing with each of those proposals internally, and then came to report the contents of their investigation.

Amongst these, the proposal made by Arai was the most easily dealt with and has already been adopted by Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank. As a reward for the support of business operations offered in his proposal, the bank presented Arai with a commemorative gift.

Atsuhito Sekiguchi assumed the position as the new president from this year.
Tadashi Yokoyama served as the president of IAMAS for six years assumed the position as professors emeritus.

Greetings from the President

I would like to extend my greetings upon assumption of the position of Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences and International Academy of Media Arts and Sciences School President as of April 1st this year. I am deeply impressed by the gravity of the responsibility being entrusted to me, as I am charged with fulfilling the great role of school president at a time when Gifu Prefecture, as well as IAMAS, is facing an important turning point regarding recent changes in international circumstances.
Referred to as Seino, the western part of Gifu Prefecture’s Mino Region is the location for Ogaki City, home of IAMAS. Seino has been endowed with fertile soil as well as rich water resources; since as long ago as ancient times and continuing to the present day, the area has provided nourishment to many people. Ogaki is known as the “water capital”. This city is located near the flood plain composed by Kiso Sansen, or three rivers named Kiso, Nagara and Ibi, and has plentiful flowing groundwater. Even in our own school pond water springs up at all times of day and night.　
From this bountiful environment Seino has cultivated abundant human resources, not only specializing in agricultural production, but also incorporating the manufacturing of tools and living supplies. It has also been said that the region was more centered on cultural pursuits than Kyoto during the Kamakura Period (1185-1333). This was due to the geographical conditions that required the highway linking Eastern and Western Japan to pass through this area. Such circumstances attest to the city’s establishment over time as a meeting place for multitudes of travelers, coming and going. Moreover, during the Edo Period (1603-1867) the area prospered as a site of scholarship focusing on Rangaku, or study of Western sciences and technology by means of the Dutch language. In turn, the area has fostered numerous medical doctors since the Meiji Period (1868-1912). In modern times the city has flourished based on its textile and manufacturing industries.
It is my belief that the mission of IAMAS is to exist as a forum for the intersection and meeting of diverse cultures and scholarship, similar to the aforementioned regional history. The Institute and Academy school system itself is unique, and the common name it goes by—IAMAS (created from the schools’ English name abbreviations)—gives the place a familiar feel. I think of this area focusing on Seino and including Ogaki, as a site for the application of scholarly work within society with the aim of contributing to sustainable industries and culture.
In the 21st Century we find that modes of research as well as science and technology are undergoing significant change. Consequentially, these alterations are leading to great transformations in the cultural and artistic worlds. At the same time, the role of high school education in society is also going through a transitional period. In these times of fast-paced change, I believe that work opportunities will largely expand for researchers and creators who go beyond existing methodologies and ways of thought. We cannot obtain fresh multifaceted results by repeating the same old methods we have clung to in the past. Owing to the times we live in, know-how in the area of expression and representation concerning healthcare, medicine, science, technology, humanities, social sciences, and fundamental concepts such as IT, environmental, life and ethical issues have gained demand.
From my perspective the IAMAS spirit is the aspiration to improve any objects and circumstances that surround us, while retaining a determined vision and will to approach objectives from new viewpoints by combining different disciplines. From here forth I anticipate that not only as students, but also as educational and research institutions we will increasingly have opportunities to directly come in contact with a variety of fields. I believe that any discipline can be comprehended and integrated at IAMAS to create multiple new “storylines” without hesitation. Finally, so that these results may be reintroduced for use in society, it is my intention to devote my energies to the further development, enrichment and innovation of the school.
I ask all of you, including the local community, for your much valued support and cooperation in these endeavors.

At present, there are some projects-in-progress located at two different places in front of the station.

One is a joint project by second year students, Kiyoshi Suganuma and Ryo Oguri, currently in the Academy DSP Course and CGI Course
respectively. The project is called "0+ (zero plus) project - a laboratory in front of the station". Although it will be conducted for just a short period of time extending until next March, “0+ project” will propose and implement a design for Ogaki City. This project will be using the long and narrow space in the northwest of the Takaya-cho Underpass, where Masaru Tabei and Macoto Murayama displayed their works in Ogaki Biennale 2008.

The second is "IAMAS OS" - the media space in front of the station that Academy Assistant Professor Kenichi Hagihara and DSP Course
first year student Mitsuru Tokisato are working on. They are thinking of having this space become a place for showing cinematic media and
exhibiting other art works. Starting today, they will be accepting plans to show videos, cinematic media and other works for exhibition.
This project will use the large space next to the three houses north of "0+", which Toshihiro Sakuma used this past Biennale.

"IAMAS OS" will be open from 2:00-9:30 on December 20th. Short animations (+IAMAS TV+ party) by the CGI Course will be shown to
provide information to the local community. (A short “Nabe Party -- traditional winter soup party" will be held from 6 o'clock.) Please
participate in, support, or cooperate with the projects and/or staffing of these sites. By all means, please come by even once to learn about these projects.

The third is a postcard project, "8 new views of Ogaki", by the Area Studies Project (ASP) in the Institute, which will start as one of
the projects to be exhibited in "IAMAS OS". This project (details to be announced later) is a trial participatory project. It reconsiders
“Ogaki” from a local perspective and attempts to unearth a fresh Ogaki image.

Although still in the trial stages, the above projects are not meant to be mere IAMAS gatherings. These projects aim to be open and
welcoming to people in the local community, and provide a space for interaction.

We ask for your warm and heart-felt support in providing an atmosphere where many people can come together and enjoy these
projects-in-progress.

The composition method Reverse-Simulation Music proposed by Masahiro Miwa, currently a professor at IAMAS (Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences), won the Golden Nica (grand prize) in the Digital Musics category of the international media art festival Ars Electronica.

Reverse-simulation music is a general term for specific phenomena, that can include acoustic events, born of intentional human actions. An important characteristic of reverse-simulation music is that human actions are carried out according to sequences resulting from iterative calculations.
