Cultivating new media creators in a variety of fields
IAMAS was opened in 2001 both as a hub for training new creators in an information society, and as an educational institution that fuses together advanced technology and artistic creativity to produce new culture. Since then IAMAS has graduated a large number of information technology specialists who are active in the broad field of media culture and industry, garnering high praise not just in Japan, but internationally as well. The school's activities cover many disciplines and offer new possibilities to industry. These activities include interaction design and media products that lead to collaboration with industry, media art that constantly explores new methods of expression, social research and design, as well as new publishing ideas. All of these endeavors exemplify the spirit of pioneering into new fields. The Department of Media Creation at IAMAS is a place where people with the desire to create something new are able to meet, collaborate, and challenge each other. Learning environment with low student numbers The Institute's master’s course accepts only approximately 20 students per year. Here, students have access to facilities and tools that enable them to dive into their research, and our unique curriculum gives students the skills they need to fully take advantage of everything the school has to offer. Naturally, IAMAS has a rich computing and software development environment, but it also boasts hands-on facilities including a prototyping lab, metal workshop, wood workshop, and visual studio. Beyond the school itself, there is also the IAMAS Media Lab located in Softopia Japan, which may be used for research or presentations. School facilities are open for use 24 hours a day, including a sleeping room and showers, which allows for students to become absorbed in their research. Innovative Media from the meeting of unique minds The strength of IAMAS lies in its diverse faculty that is active both in Japan and abroad. Representing fields of creative industry, art, and design, a myriad of professionals are gathered here, who utilize their talent and experience to conduct high level education and research. Students from many different academic backgrounds are admitted to the school, where they can further their individual research from an interdisciplinary perspective that is unique to IAMAS. This melding of minds foments the kind of forward thinking needed to contextualize the future of society.
