President's Greeting

President Atsuhito Sekiguchi
Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences International Academy of Media Arts and Sciences
As the current President of IAMAS (since April 2009), I would like to offer my warmest greetings.
In the face of the changing global situation, Gifu Prefecture and IAMAS are both
navigating through a critical turning point. Having taken over the crucial role of President during this time of change, I truly feel the weight of my responsibility.
Our school is located in Ogaki City, in the southwestern region of Gifu prefecture. This area is bestowed with fertile land and water, with Ogaki being known as "The City of Water". It is also located near the crossing of three major rivers, The Kiso river, the Nagara river, and the Ibi river, and the vast majority of this region has underground water flowing through it, symbolized by the pond on our campus. IAMAS exists as a place where myriad cultures and academic disciplines mix together. Although the school structure of the Academy and the Institute are different, they are joined together under the umbrella of IAMAS. Our school strives to use academics to contribute to society and support long-term industry and culture in Ogaki and the Seino region. In this new century, the role and presence of science and technology research is undergoing many changes. This is also resulting in extensive shifts in the art and culture world and in advanced education. In these rapidly changing modern times, there will be more opportunities available for young researchers and creators who don't adhere strictly to previously established methods or modes of thought. Simply following previous work and conducting derivative research won't yield varied, original results. So now more than ever I think it is important to incorporate know-how from creative fields into the fundamental concepts of information, environment, life, and ethics, and the disciplines of socio-cultural studies, science, engineering, medicine and nursing. I believe the spirit of IAMAS lies in its commitment to high standards and its will to approach interdisciplinary work from a bold, new perspective. From here on, IAMAS students, and the school's research itself, will be coming into contact with a plethora of fields. I believe this school and its students capable of mastering and combining appropriate disciplines, and venturing undaunted into unknown research territory. It is our goal to reform and refine the school so that we may implement our research results back into society. |
