The Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences is referred to and well known by its abbreviation: IAMAS.
IAMAS opened its doors as an educational institution that upholds a fusion of advanced technology and artistic creation as its founding principle and produces new culture, as well as a hub of cultivation for new expressionists in information societies.
Since then, IAMAS has turned out many talented people that are active in the widespread fields of media culture and industry, and is highly rated nationally and internationally. The activities of IAMAS have spanned multiple areas with the changes in society and era and IAMAS is filled with fascination that pioneers unknown areas, such as interaction designs and media products that give birth to new contrivances and tools, media art that creates new expressions, and social designs that propose new ways of being for society. It is there that teachers and students, who have a strong determination to bring forth new things, as well as experience and views in a wide range of fields, gather together, and by inspiring each other, they take up new challenges for various things in modern society. The fact that IAMAS is a place where various people can become deeply involved with others while conducting their research creation is the exceedingly large appeal of the school.
As a graduate school with only a master’s course, with the “one major, one department” of Media Creation in the Media Creation department, IAMAS conducts its educational research under a policy of “select, talented few”, with 20 students in each school year. In regards to the free research theme, a living environment, where teachers and students from various and different fields can devote themselves to their research while discussing with each other, is put into place. And due to the hands-on curriculum that has projects as its focus, students can pursue the processes that go from idea to producing social achievements.
Within the school, as part of their living environment, each student is provided with the latest notebook computer, and is free to use many application that would be necessary for their individual research areas. Also, from the educational concept that aims to help students acquire techniques for their minds and their hands by having them use both, facilities like the prototyping lab, metal and woodworking workshop rooms, and visual studio, which have equipment that allow for quick creation of market and proto-models, are available. By using these school facilities, students can devote themselves to their research and creation over a 24-hour period. Use of the sleeping rooms and showers is also possible as well.
New relocation plan
IAMAS is currently planning to move to the Softopia area in 2014. And in that area, where various organizations, activities and information has accumulated, IAMAS will be able to conduct even more extensive activities. Even in the sense that we will be implementing new ways of being for media creation in a suburban city, it will be a year for a new start. The direction of IAMAS’s activities broaden along with the changes in society, and after the move, we will maintain the research and creation environment. Along with the pursuit of the possibilities of media creation via educational research, as an open campus that can conduct widely collaborative activities not just within the school but also with external parties, IAMAS will advance as a graduate school that continues to produce new cultures, while questioning society on its results.
