Possibility of a short film by self-playing on the premise of watching on a smartphone

As internet video becomes more common, movie theaters – formerly places where many people gathered to watch movies – have become more like event spaces where small numbers of people can carefully watch films and enjoy a feeling of oneness with other viewers. One could say that today, how movies are made and the way they are presented are greatly changing. Against this background, this research aims to search for the possibilities of live-action film from the model of the genre that has conventionally been called ‘documentary’. Documentary filmmakers like Makoto Sato indicates that there is no absolute truth; recently, we have seen documentaries that boldly incorporate elements of fiction Watashitachi ni Yurusareta Tokubetsu na Jikan no Owari, directed by and starring Shingo Ota, that boldly incorporate elements of fiction. This genre, wherein documentary and drama are difficult to separate is a new creative method that has not been adequately analyzed.
This thesis explores the possibilities of smartphone filmmaking while implementing it through my graduate project Summer of Anonymous while organizing previous examples of this method.
In the first chapter, I outline the background leading up to this research, describing the possibilities of live action film as it is deeply linked to our daily lives. In chapter 2, I describe the process of creating my graduate project through the attempts, discoveries, and reflections I made through two practice pieces based on the background I summarized in chapter 1. In chapter 3, I analyze the structure, editing, performance, and cinematography in films where truth and falsehood are mixed in a way that is different from all other documentary films using the aforementioned example of Shingo Ota’s work. In chapter 4, using examples of films made with smartphones and intended to be viewed on smartphones. In chapter 5, I analyze my short film Summer of Anonymous and explore the possibilities that it represents as a new form of smart-phone filmmaking where the film’s director is also a performer.
