Archival Archetyping

“Archival Archetyping” is the concept of simultaneously creating both an archive and an archetype for new creations by recording and storing creative acts to serve as machine learning models. In this first year of the project, we worked with researchers to explore artificial intelligence as a “mirror,” not just a tool, a slave, or a substitute for human beings.
The main result of our work is The Morandi Room, a hands-on exhibit in which spectators freely arrange and compose objects modeled after the motifs employed by Giorgio Morandi, a painter active in the first half of the 20th century, and an image that reproduces the painter’s style of coloring is generated via machine learning.
Our two other works focused on the research, recording, preserving, and communication of the feelings, thoughts, and actions of the people who visited the Aichi Triennale 2019, an art festival that sparked a debate over freedom of expression. We exhibited these works at the “Gifu Ogaki Biennale 2019” and “IAMAS 2020.”
