In 2015, this project class began doing fieldwork in the Neo region, a village situated in the mountainous regions of Gifu-ken Mitoshi-shi. Our main objective is build new creations with creative people, as well as to adopt different perspectives to rethink new design and technology within the day-to-day culture of Neo, a region blessed with abundant nature and historical culture.
Starting from the fourth year of the project, our interest moved from our initial objective of creating new things, to the systems that the people of Neo have created to support their livelihoods, focusing particularly on ancient shrines, traditional arts, and the water-distribution system the villagers created. Through fieldwork, we uncovered how this system comprised of humans and the environment has evolved.
In 2019, the final year of this project class, we published a booklet summarizing the evolution of the systems we witnessed as part of our investigation and fieldwork based upon the following questiosn: what sort of relationship-processes led to the patterns of change that these systems underwent over the long period of their development?
