社会生態系システムが変化を余儀なくされながら、基本的に同じ機能・構造・フィードバックを維持できる能力をレジリエンスと呼ぶ。人類による資源やシステムの最適化は社会生態系システムのレジリエンスを低下させる。限界集落化や地域経済の衰退などは社会生態系システムのレジリエンスの問題であり、既存のシステムから脱却し、異なるレジーム（別の安定状態）への移行と捉えられる。そこに短期的な資源の最適化とは異なる、人と自然が長期に相互作用しながら社会生態系システムを再構築していく可能性を見出すことができる。本プロジェクトでは、地域の問題を「社会生態系システムのレジリエンス」として捉え直し、また意識化することで、これからの持続可能な地域社会への移行を望む私たちにとって何が大切なのかを探求することを目的とする。今年度（1年目）は、山村集落や水力発電所跡や自前水源システムなど25回のフィールド調査を通して、「分解者」という一つの答えに辿り着いた。分解者とは、生産者・消費者・還元者だが、あるものを違うものへと作り変えるという意味において「世界を作り直す」ものである。IAMAS2021では多様な分解者の姿を展示した。

Despite the fact that social ecosystems are being forced to change, their ability to fundamentally maintain their functions, structures and feedback is called “resilience.” When humans optimize resources and systems, the resilience of social ecosystems deteriorates. Depopulating and aging villages, as well as declining regional economies, are issues of social ecosystem resilience. Those changes can be seen as a form of breaking away from existing systems and transitioning to new regimes (other stable conditions). That is where we can discover the possibility of reconstructing the social ecosystem, not through the short-term optimization of resources, but through long-term mutual interactions between people and nature. This project aims to recast and recognize regional issues as the “resilience of social ecosystems,” and explore what is important to us as we hope to transition to achieving sustainable regional communities. During this academic year (first year), we conducted 25 field studies, such as of small villages in the mountains, former hydroelectric power plant sites, and independent water supply systems. They led us to this answer: decomposers. Decomposers are producers, consumers and restorers, but they also regenerate and transform various things into other things. In that sense, they are “recreators of the world.” At IAMAS 2021, we featured various decomposers.
