Gifu Academy of Forest Science and Culture Lecture Collaboration “Digital fabrication”

2022

Digital fabrication and woodworking, rediscover mutual technologies through repeated fine tuning

The Gifu Academy of Forest Science and Culture, and IAMAS' collaborative lecture on “Digital fabrication” was held in person for the first time in 3 years.

The collaborative lectures between the Gifu Academy of Forest Science and Culture and IAMAS which have been held since 2016 take place over the span of two days using IAMAS’ facilities in the innovation studio to learn about digital fabrication technologies.
In the lecture that was held this year with the theme of “wood and tools”, related documents were fleshed out based on the insights gained from the online lectures in 2020 and 2021. On top of these documents, through an application that can be utilized with no time limit, an environment where one could learn before the lecture was made.

Objective and Results

Alongside learning about digital fabrication technologies by making things from data and creating works with laser printing processing in this collaborative lecture, mixed with the expertise of the Gifu Academy of Forest Science and Culture in woodworking technologies, we aimed to deepen our understanding and rediscover these technologies from a mutual perspective.
The theme this time of “wood and tools” involved taking note of the little problems that surround us and creating “tools”. We tested for the most optimal material to use through repeated fine tuning and outputting as even with the same data, based on the wood used there are differences that bring about large changes in the appearance in the carving processing. Further, in the those two days the lectures took place, characteristic deviations in the cutting process and data as a result of laser printing occurred so even a gauge for data creation was developed.

The role of IAMAS

Based on interviews with the teachers in charge at the Gifu Academy of Forest Science and Culture, we designed the lecture and assigned the teachers in charge.
