Place Sense Media: Yanagase

2022

Defamiliarizing and pondering a place experience through exchange with others and media

As members of the Place Sense Media project launched this academic year, we have visited actual locations and converted what we felt and thought there into a certain form, as well as sharing and discussing our feelings and thoughts among one another. This process leads to the creation of new images of places and also transforms our senses––this is the idea that underlies our production efforts and exhibition event.

For this exhibition, we carried out research and production focusing on a place called Yanagase. The collective photo work Yanagasense presented images taken from the perspective of each project member, giving form to a synthesized image of Yanagase. The acoustic work Metronome Walk in Yanagase intertwined the acoustic paths of project members––who each walked around with a metronome and microphone––with one another within the gallery.

Purpose and outcome

For this exhibition, we carried out research and production focusing on a place called Yanagase. Our aim was to capture the transition of a city over time from a “sensual” approach, and to have discussions based on representations of that transition. Research and interaction with locals played a vital part in the production process. The talks by a Yanagase-born building owner working on town revitalization and a visual anthropologist who was also from Yanagase helped us put the issue of “place” in a larger social, cultural context. The venue, Bicafe, functions as a facility for cultural exchange in the community.
We were introduced to the guest speakers and were able to reach a larger audience thanks to the generous cooperation of the facility.

Role of IAMAS

We presented Yanagase from diverse angles through image, video, and acoustic displays, which gave us the opportunity to engage in dialogue with exhibition visitors. The exhibition also served as an opportunity for members from IAMAS to meet and interact with new people. Although the exhibition was received positively by the locals, some criticized it as being “superficial and out of place.” This kind of practical feedback gave us the opportunity to revisit our connections with people and places.
