Research concerning the museums activities of disseminating education via the usage of AR learning materials – the development of an application to experience a “man-made satellite” through AR

2023

As one part of the total design for the children oriented lectures in this fiscal year, the Gifu-Kakamigahara Air and Space Museum (also known as “Sorahaku”) designed a display and set up a system to learn about and appreciate man-made satellites through AR. Through cooperating with Sorahaku an exhibition space where children could learn experientially was discussed.

Process and results

In the midst of the collaborative research which is approaching its second year since beginning in the 2022 fiscal year concerning “the design of a learning space using learning materials – the complete design of the children’s “junior space expert qualification course”, discussions were held about devising a method to have an exhibition space that uses AR technology. As a result, from this fiscal year onwards, IAMAS and Sorahaku have started joint research in both areas.
The AR learning materials developed through research traced the orbit of a satellite and the orbiting was displayed through 3DCG when an iPad with an application running was held up to the exhibit showing the man-made satellites’ orbit trail. Now as a first step towards its permanent exhibition, it was in operation for a short period of time for the children oriented lectures. The participating children observed the 7 orbiting man-made satellites from various angles and wrote down what they noticed on their worksheets, etc., creating an opportunity to make a step forward in heuristic learning.
Henceforth, whilst updating the AR learning materials, there are discussions taking place for a way to have the display in operation permanently.
