Rediscovering the town through field coding “IAMAS Kodomo Daigaku 2025”

2025

At the RCIC, we have collaborated with alumni to put effort into implementing workshops with local government and educational institutions. As part of “IAMAS Kodomo Daigaku 2025”—a workshop series that has been spreading IAMAS’ founding philosophy of fusing scientific thinking and artistic sense to elementary school students since 2017—we implemented a field recording workshop facilitated by Ms.Tomoko Ueyama, an IAMAS graduate and sound artist.

This time, we welcomed IAMAS graduate and sound artist Tomoko Ueyama, as a speaker and held a field recording workshop titled “The Sounds of Ogaki” oriented towards elementary school students in Ogaki city.

Around 20 elementary school students participated in the workshop. The participants started off by receiving an explanation on how to use the equipment such as recorders, doing ear exercises to listen out for sounds they don’t normally notice, and made preparations to head into the field. Then they actually headed out into the town, listening carefully and exploring sounds, recording the ones they found interesting.
When the participants returned from their field recording session, they selected one of the sounds they had collected, listened to it together, and shared their impressions.
The children who participated found it interesting to reexamine the park they usually walk around from a sonic perspective, and they shared a fresh sense of joy in being able to notice the sounds they had been hearing all along without really realising by engaging in field recording.

The sounds recorded during the workshop will be developed into a sound map titled “The Sounds of Ogaki” and presented as an exhibition in the lobby of Ogaki City Hall in January 2026.
